Integral planning at KLM
Enhancing the planning domain with integral insights

Challenge
Big companies often deal with big application landscapes and legacy software. Especially in the enterprise domain where employees need to make important company decisions, there is a need for clear and unambiguous information to steer upon. The aim for this project was to connect and improve the current set of tools in order to make better integral network planning decisions for KLM as a whole.

Solution
We helped shaping the fragmented application landscape toward a strategic UX product vision. A unified front-end for planners with different needs to empower integral decision-making for an optimized and robust flight schedule. There is never a joint positive outcome for all stakeholders but when you get insights in the benefits for other departments, it is more likely that you contribute to that solution, even though it may affect your planning in a negative way.

Approach
Making a complex story attractive and understandable can take many forms. With small illustrations, infographics and data explorations, it makes it a lot easier to convey the message. With research, we found out what happens today and where the process can improve. With that in mind, we crafted a concept for the future and scaled that back to what we can deliver today. That was the starting point for the first version of a new, roles based seamless planning front end.

You are never alone
UX designers in the logistics domain are facing similar challenges. That is why we joined forces with other companies like NS, Schiphol and Harbour of Rotterdam to share insights during exchanges. On way of working, service design strategies and product designs, we try to enable employees to improve their working live with better solutions.
