The beautiful Haringvliet
Reconnecting this unique Dutch estuary with the sea

The Haringvliet project
The Haringvliet is the mouth of two large European rivers – the Rhine and the Meuse. With the completion of the Haringvliet dam in 1971, the Haringvliet was closed off from the sea and the unique delta life came to a standstill. By opening the sluices again, the fish can migrate between the river and the sea, and salt water will flow again into the Haringvliet. An important start for the recovery of the lost delta nature.

Challenge
Six environmental organizations with World Wildlife Fund in the lead asked us to design a brand that reflects their ambition: ample room for the dynamics of delta nature, migratory fish and birds, and something that people can enjoy too! That’s a big audience. Policy makers, nature enthusiasts, wildlife experts to mention a few. All part of the audience to convey the message towards.

Solution
We designed one Haringvliet brand with six subprojects for which we created separate logos. That was the starting point of the visual language. With so many target groups, we needed a wide range of branding elements, serving the needs of the different expressions. The watercolor-like style, featured in the illustrations and animations, symbolizes the mixing of fresh and saltwater when the Haringvliet sluices open. The sublogos enabled us to specify the relevant message for the right audience. All contributing to the regional presence of the Haringvliet ambition.

Approach
This story can be told in many different ways so we needed a way to streamline this. With a short animation in different languages, we made sure that every presentation could start off at the right foot. For the different subprojects, the sublogos connected with the Haringvliet brand. With the brand elements, we created a family of building blocks to design detailed reports, lively infographics, project flyers and area marketing booklets.
It's a wrap
When the funding of the project ended, we were asked to create a way to expose all the fruitful initiatives that had taken place. And so we did with an interactive map, summarizing all the actions that were taken and all the new icons that were created. And last but not least, the next steps.
