Timber data sourcing at Probos
A tool for improving sustainable forest management

Challenge
To position timber as a climate-friendly resource, sustainable sourcing must become a priority in the timber trade. Timber Trade Federations (TTFs) across Europe are encouraging members to procure timber only from certified, sustainably managed forests. This shift not only supports sustainable practices but also aligns with new legal standards, such as the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). However, the sector requires accurate, detailed data on sustainable sourcing to track progress and drive meaningful change.

Solution
To meet this need, we worked with Probos to develop Thémis, an online tool for sustainable timber market research. Launched in 2021, Thémis tracks industry progress, analyzes purchasing data, and promotes transparency within the timber sector. The tool enables TTF member companies to report annual timber purchasing data with a focus on certified sustainable sources, helping them measure their impact and stay ahead of regulatory requirements.

Approach
Thémis adds value across the sector by allowing companies to track sustainable sourcing performance, benchmark against industry targets, and generate annual declarations of progress. TTFs gain insights into member practices, enabling targeted support and strengthening the value of membership. The project ultimately aims to support sustainable forest management in timber-producing regions by encouraging TTFs to adopt ambitious sourcing goals, increasing the demand for timber from sustainably managed forests.
